Music Nostalgia

One of the great things about clearing out a house is all the items that come to light after being hidden away in an attic too long. I vaguely remembered keeping some of my old vinyl LPs from my teen years but hadn't realised husband and I had three record cases full of them. I even discovered half a dozen singles I didn't know I'd kept!

We've now whittled it down to one case and I've had great fun looking through my collection - they're mostly mine along with several old classical LPs that once belonged to my father-in-law. Rock Around the Clock is husband's and we both bought the Gilbert O'Sullivan after we were married as well as Kate Bush, but The Sound of Music, South Pacific, Mantovani, Zorba the Greek, Strauss, The Nutcracker and The Flower Garden are all mine, amongst others!

These are only a selection of what we've kept and I fully intend buying a retro-style record player at some point so we can listen to them again. Evidently vinyl is becoming ever more popular and I heard a radio programme where they were discussing the better quality of records over CDs. I'm not worried about that as I won't be giving up listening to all my CDs any time soon, but it will be great fun playing these old records again one day. And I'm sure at least one story is percolating in the back of my mind.

Gosh, yes, we had a stack of LPs in the attic and got rid of most of them a few years ago, but there may be some lurking somewhere. Gilbert O' Sullivan was the first LP I bought for myself! 'My Ding-a-Ling' by Chuck Berry was the first 45 bought for me (I was FAR too young to understand the double-entendres!) and the first 45 I bought for myself was The Bump by Kenny, with a 50p WH Smith voucher I'd been given :)

Wishing you happy times listening to all your oldies when you get the facility to play them x

We've got about 500 vinyl LPs and a turntable to play them on, too. I would never part with them, but I have converted quite a few to mp3s to play in the car. What I miss with CDs and downloads is the cover art and the sleeve notes.

How fantastic to rediscover these, Rosemary. We have kept all ours too - I never loved CDs as much as vinyl. I could never detect any improvement in sound quality even though my husband insisted they were better! The first single I bought was Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes and I nearly wore it out! My first album was The Sound of Music and I played it every day - a cheaper version than the film soundtrack - and sang along until my mother begged me to stop! xxx

Love hearing about everyone's music and record memories!

Lovely to hear about your own music nostalgia, Helen - thanks for that! Glad you liked G o'S too.

Wow - that's brilliant, Julia, especially when you can actually play them! Yes, the cover art is a good point.

Thanks for sharing those lovely memories, Joanna. Now that single (LGWMRG) certainly makes me recall a particular party where one of the boys kept asking for it to be played in my honour!

Lovely memories and lovely record covers. The smaller CD ones can only be a pale reflection of the originals.
Just re-reading for the fifth or sixth time, Blackberry Wine by Joanne Harris, which includes some atmospheric songs from the 1970s, not on vinyl, of course, but on a transistor radio!

I love a bit of nostalgia, it's good for the soul reliving our youth.

Thanks, Jean. Think that's one of Joanne's that i haven't read yet!

I think it must be, Maria, as long as we don't dwell too long in the past - though it's good for writers!

Recently, my husband and I had a session playing our old vinyl records. He played Bowie while I played The Thompson Twns!

That sounds like fun, Wendy!
