Man's Inhumanity to Man

With the terrible events in Paris at the weekend, I decided to stay away from social media for most of the time as I didn't want to take part in discussions, or change my profile picture, or have to read various opinions on the subject, and posting anything else seemed too trite and unnecessary.

It was enough to see and hear what had happened via the news and to quietly grieve for the victims and their families, as I do with every tragedy and atrocity that takes place by accident or design. I don't mind talking about things in person with friends or family but the Internet is too anonymous and too open to misunderstanding. However, I'm sure some people find comfort in online discussion or debate - I just won't join in.

So the only thing I'm going to quote on here is the verse from Robert Burns famous Dirge: 'Man Was Made to Mourn':

"Many and sharp the num'rous ills
Inwoven with our frame!
More pointed still we make ourselves,
Regret, remorse, and shame!
And man, whose heav'n-erected face
The smiles of love adorn, -
Man's inhumanity to man
Makes countless thousands mourn!

People do awful things. At least some people do. Others do nice things, wonderful, fun, kind, thoughtful things. There are far more in the second group.

That's brought tears to my eyes and the flowers are lovely. I too don't like to get into politics and horrific events on facebook or social media, Rosemary. Agree with all you say as well.

Very dignified, Rosemary. I agree with you about the social media stuff. When I saw the French flag being used on FB profile pics, two things struck me. 1) What about all the other tragedies? 2) At what point would it be acceptable to change my pic again?

You're absolutely right, Patsy, and I usually always prefer to think on the positives, but it felt right to post something like this for a change.

Thanks so much for that kind comment, Suzy - really appreciate it.

That's exactly the kind of problems that can arise, Julia - thanks for your kind comment.
